Hi there

I’m 34 and over the last year have been suffering from a relapse of a disc prolapse (L5/S1) that occurred back in 2004. As this was the only the 3rd relapse – but a bad one – I decided to undertake proper rehab through a local physio. The first dealt with the acute problem through manipulation and once that helped, he referred me to his colleague for rehab. She was a clinical pilates instructor too. She quickly worked out my core was weak (I was once very fit/Army etc) and I need to do certain exercises to single out my core to help my lower back issues as well as the very tight sciatic nerves I have ( i thought it was hamstrings but they proved why that wasn’t the case!) . I enjoy my golf and want to get back into running which IU haven;t done for almost a year now.

ANYWAY – the machine that I was using with her was a Reformer (from dma clinical pilates in Australia/NZ). I was amazed at how hard the exercises were to do at first (proving my weak core) but what level of improvement I have made and how it has helped my back pain. It’s very evident – I don;t shake with beads of sweat rolling dow my concentrating face anymore when doing soming of the exercises!

I go once every 2 or 3 weeks but primarily to use the Reformer. So I might as well spend the money and get my own to use at home and use it say 3 times a week. My question, given your comments I saw somewhere on the web, is will the Pilates Power Gym do the majority of what I want to do? I see it’s not entirely the same as a reformer (e.g. the arm cords are not independant from the sliding bed) but the weight trainig part of it appeals to me too, as well as the compact nature of the machine.

For example I have knelt on the reformer with my knees up against the foam head pieces and pull on the straps from a position of arms 30 degs in front of me to down by my sides. Also in the same position but on all fours with my hands on the runners in front of me (missing on the PPG) bring my knees towards my hands and “rolling” my bottom under. Again – not sure if this can be done on the PPG. Also, sitting on the leg bar with my hands on the bar also by my bottom and pushing the padded boad away from me using my feet. Can the bar on the PPG take sitting weight? Lastly, I would stand side facing the long edge of the reformer with one foot on the padded board and the other on the fixed foot plate and push the foot on the board down the runners, changing my centre of gravity accordingly. There is no visible foot board on the Pilates Power Gym.

I would appreciate any feedback you could give me. Obviously you haven’t met me, or have assessed my condition or know the exercises I have been doing – but I guess what is more important is are there any fundamental things the PPG CAN’T do or help me with such as above? Or can improvisations be made?

Many thanks in anticipation of your help.

Kind regards and look forward to hearing from you.

Richard

Dear Carol,
I have suffered with back problems now for over 15 years, I am now 52 and have back problems on a regular basis, I have been to the doctors now, as I have always paid private for physio and never bothered the doctor, I was given no examination and told to take 8 paracetemolts a day, thats no good to me, I work for myself, and have a horse to look after, grandchildren to look after and i have always been fit and active, my back is now holding me up, I spoke to a friend who recommended Pilates, can you tell me if there are any classes in the Hedon, Preston, Keyingham Area and when they are.
My Thanks,
Carole Tesseyman.
